The Procedure

We know how important it is for parents to remain fully informed of their little ones care.

Below is an overview of the process, including the methods we employ and what you can expect on the day of the procedure.

Understanding Infant Circumcision

Circumcision involves the surgical removal of the foreskin from the penis. This minor
procedure is often performed for religious, cultural, or medical reasons. At Sheffield
Circumcision Clinic, we prioritise your child’s safety and comfort, ensuring the procedure
is conducted in a professional and caring environment.

Circumcision Devices

We utilise the Plastibell and Circumplast devices, both of which are widely recognised for their safety and efficacy in infant circumcision

Plastibell Method

The Plastibell technique involves placing a small bell-shaped plastic ring over the head of the penis, under the foreskin. A suture is then tied around the foreskin over the ring, cutting off the blood supply to the foreskin. The excess foreskin is trimmed, and the plastic ring remains in place. Over the next few days, the foreskin tissue dies and the ring falls off naturally, typically within 7 to 10 days, leaving a healed circumcision. This method is quick and eliminates the need for stitches or dressings required by other techniques. We minimise any discomfort with the use of local anaesthesia.

Circumplast Method

Like the Plastibell, the Circumplast device is a plastic ring used for infant circumcision. The procedure involves placing the Circumplast ring over the glans and securing it with a suture to cut off blood flow to the foreskin. The excess foreskin is then removed, and the ring remains in place until it naturally detaches, usually within 7 to 10 days. This method is quick and eliminates the need for stitches or dressings required by other techniques. We minimise any discomfort with the use of local anaesthesia.

Arrival and Registration

Upon arrival at Sheffield Circumcision Clinic, you will be welcomed by our staff and guided through the registration process. You will have received an information pack prior to your appointment which also details the various documents you will need to bring with you on the day. We ensure all necessary paperwork is completed and address any questions or concerns you may have.

A qualified clinician will conduct a thorough assessment of your baby to confirm he is fit for the procedure. This includes reviewing medical history and ensuring there are no contraindications.

The genital area is cleaned to reduce infection risk. A local anaesthetic is administered using a tiny injection to numb the area, ensuring your baby experiences minimal discomfort during the procedure. Our team is skilled in providing gentle and effective pain relief tailored for infants.

Once the anaesthesia has taken effect, the chosen method (Plastibell or Circumplast) is applied. The procedure itself is quick, typically taking
around 10 minutes. Our experienced practitioners perform the circumcision with precision and care, prioritising your little one’s well-being
throughout.

After the procedure, you and your baby will be escorted to a comfortable area where our medical team will monitor your child for approximately 20 minutes to ensure there are no immediate concerns. This observation period also allows us to provide reassurance and address any questions you may have.

Before leaving, you will receive comprehensive aftercare instructions, including how to care for the circumcision site and what to expect during
the healing process. We provide an aftercare leaflet and a letter for your GP to keep them informed. Our team is dedicated to supporting you beyond the clinic visit, offering 24/7 aftercare support to address any concerns during your baby’s recovery.

At Sheffield Circumcision Clinic, we understand that the decision to circumcise your child is significant.
We are committed to providing a safe, professional, and compassionate service, ensuring you feel informed and supported every step of the way.
